300 Garments Saved to date

Forged over decades of friendship, fashion has always been a true mark of sisterhood between Rachel and Elynn. Discovering affordable and stylish clothes at bazaars often uncovered a euphoria when a coveted piece is found. The process of rehoming loved garments is not a new concept to the two founders who have been practicing the art of cherishing garments through reviving them during their university days.

Impact With Woven

We believe that Woven is partaking in the founding stages and the radical transformation of the retail industry in Singapore. Local consumers prioritize sustainability and the post-pandemic consumer's shopping motivations are driving new demand for thrift. The second-hand market is projected to double in the next 5 years, reaching $77b - (Global data 2021 market sizing and growth estimates). The resale market’s projected growth is driven by more sellers mindfully putting great products into the market and this is where we see Woven as a vehicle to reach this goal.

We both strongly believe that it's a blessing to be able to provide. We hope to center on helping women in Singapore who are in challenging situations and are unable to commit to full time fixed hours employment. This may include single mothers, or mothers with children who needs special care. We offer flexible employment arrangements for these women and commit to fair living wages, skills training and mindful work environments. The sustainable employment model can then empower these women to better meet the needs of their families and enhancing their overall quality in life.

With your help we can make this a reality.

  • 80% of our fashion is made by 18-24 year old young women around the world? (Fashion Revolution, 2022), and that the Fashion Industry relies on 98 million tons of non-renewable resources a year, (Fashion Transparency Index, 2021).

  • The people who make our clothes - mostly women - earn less than they need to live on (Good Clothes Fair Pay, 2022). With a growing fashion industry valued at 3 trillion dollars it is our heart to close the pay gap as the years go by to steer away from exploitation. Global fashion movements such as Fashion Revolution seek to educate and note landmarks to help achieve this. To cultivate a community of mindful buyers, Woven takes heed from research and industry reports to align with the best practices. Read more about fair wages and true stories on Worker Diaries and regional call to actions to Break the Chain for more information.

  • Fast fashion impacts many different human rights areas, where fast fashion companies and their suppliers can exploit cheap labour and lax environmental laws and regulations. This was spotlighted in global media during the Rana Paza Collapse in 2013.

The fashion consumer market is increasingly conditioned to wear garments for not more than five times. This is due to the decline of garment quality produced in masses (colour fades, frays etc.) as a result of decreasing education about garment care and the use of quality materials. Moreover, fashion trends set by big fashion houses change rapidly. This culture enables fast fashion to produce cheap, disposable clothing in the masses.

Woven hopes to counter this by selecting timeless pre-loved garments and encouraging customers to cherish the items for a longer period of time.
